Sports and Remedial Massage is a relatively recent development combining techniques drawn from Swedish massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, kinesiology and Rolfing.

What training does a Sports Massage Therapist have?

A sports therapist will usually hold a diploma from a recognised training institute. Training varies enormously from place to place because massage is, by and large, not regulated by any one institute or organisation.

Therapists are trained in anatomy and physiology, advanced massage skills, pathology and the understanding of sports injury and rehabilitation.

Who shouldn’t have a Sports Massage?

If you have a fever, an infectious disease, an inflammation, osteoporosis, varicose veins, large areas of bruising, cancer of extreme fatigue, a sports massage practitioner may prefer not to work with you until he or she has checked with your doctor or consultant.

Alternatively, the therapist might modify the massage in some way. If you are in any doubt, ask your doctor if you are suitable candidate for deep tissue, sports and remedial massage.

The qualified sports masseur is trained to not only decide what kind of massage may be of use, but also to assess when a patient is unsuitable for a sports massage and should be referred to another practitioner.

The attitude of doctors towards sports massage is very positive. This is partly because massage is not seen as an alternative to orthodox medicine, but rather as genuinely complimentary to it. General Practitioners and Sports Medicine Doctors find massage therapists especially useful for patients with persistent aches and pains for which no medical disorder has been found.

According to Functional Medicine expert Dr. Ron Grisanti, D.C., the most effective non-surgical treatment for sports-related injuries or those resulting from mechanical overuse is a technique called transverse friction massage. Popularized by the late British orthopedic physician Dr. James Cyriax, it is often an excellent alternative to steroid injections.

First of all the therapist will ask you some questions about your health and medical history and then a physical evaluation will take place. Sometimes the sports massage therapist will use your treatment as assessment, this means to get a better understanding of how healthy the muscles are and whether there are any trigger points, adhesions and restrictions in the body.

Sports massage stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some techniques use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.
